In 1973, Liu Kuo-sung established a two-year diploma course in Contemporary Ink Painting in Hong Kong and held two Contemporary Ink Art Exhibitions in 1975 and 1976. In 1977, the Hong Kong Modern Ink Painting Society (HKMIPS) was formally established with the participants of the two Modern Ink Painting Exhibitions as its backbone. Since its inception, the HKMIPS has been committed to researching and expanding the field of ink painting, respecting the different styles of ink creations among its members, and organizing academic lectures and international exhibitions of the ink medium. As the consultant of the HKMIPS, Liu Kuo-sung has a sense of mission to develop and promote the traditional culture of the nation. He continues to advocate the ‘modernization of Chinese painting’, which has brought modern ink painting into the mainstream of Chinese art. Liu Kuo-sung is also known as the father of modern ink painting and the pioneer of modern Chinese painting.
